Summary: An outbreak of Salmonella has been identified in seven provinces; the source appears to be tainted onions imported from the USA, grown and processed by Thomson International.

In the summer of 2020 there was a massive outbreak of Salmonella, with confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport illness linked to this outbreak in seven provinces. Following a joint investigation by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA), along with numerous other federal and provincial public health agencies across Canada, it was discovered the source of the outbreak appears to have originated from onions and onion products grown, processed and imported from the USA by Thomson International Inc.

These onions were rebranded then resold in Canada by numerous brands and stores. In addition to being sold as onions, these tainted products were found in foods such as salsas, salads, and sandwiches. They were even found in things like crab cakes, marinades, and butter chicken sauces.

515 people came forward reporting they became sick from these onions and had their illness confirmed as Salmonella. Having said that, it is our belief that significantly more people were affected but did not report their experiences (especially because of peoples’ reluctance to go into a hospital in 2020 due to a fear of contracting COVID-19).

In the Statement of Claim filed by Guardian Law Group, the Plaintiffs claim Thomson International Inc. and ABC Corporation breached their duty of care in many ways, such as: “failing to test its Onion and Onion Products thoroughly prior to marketing and distribution;” “Failing to implement adequate procedures for the cleaning of equipment in order to prevent the contamination of food products;” and “Failing to recall all the Onions and tainted products immediately upon learning that people were becoming ill after ingesting them.”

The first reported illnesses from these onions occurred the week of June 14th 2020, while the first (limited) recall by Thomson International didn’t occur until August 1st 2020. The Public Health Agency of Canada didn’t report that the outbreak appeared to be over until October 1st 2020.

While this outbreak appears to be over, it is important to come forward if you were affected by these contaminated foods. We expect the foods we purchase in Canada to be safe, especially our produce. By joining this Class Action you are putting your voice forward that you won’t accept unsafe foods produced by foreign companies to be sold on our shelves. You are helping to product the vulnerable and those at the greatest risk so they don’t get seriously hurt by something like this in the future.
