Alleged Sexual Assaults in the Jehovah’s Witness
Defendants: Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Canada
Summary: It is alleged that certain policies and procedures of the Jehovah’s Witness / the Watch Tower facilitates sexual abuse against minors, as well as creating an environment which systemically underreports these abuses.
The Jehovah’s Witness (formally known as Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Canada, or ‘the Watch Tower’) is a religious organization with more than 8 million members worldwide. In Canada, there are roughly 115,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses.
There have been claims made by a growing number of members and former members of this faith, whom state that they were sexually abused while minors by members of the church. According to many of these claimants, the policies and structure of the church made it easier for these abuses to take place. Additionally, it has also been claimed that they felt pressured, either directly or indirectly, by members of the church or because of the policies of the church.
While Guardian Law Group believes in religious freedoms, Guardian strongly believes that sexual abuse is never acceptable; especially when the abuse is against a child. We believe any rule or policy which facilitates these kinds of acts needs to be changed, and that anyone guilty of these kinds of actions needs to be held responsible.
