Outbreak at Shepherd’s Care Millwoods Long Term Care Centre
Defendants: Shepherd’s Care Foundation, and
Shepherd’s Care Millwoods
Summary: There was an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Shepherd’s Care Millwoods Long Term Care Centre which resulted in over 100 confirmed infections and over a dozen deaths.
One of the first pieces of information to come out about this ongoing pandemic is that COVID-19 has a disproportionately-high mortality rate amongst older adults.
As Canadians, we believe in protecting our families and safeguarding those in need. It should have been a priority by all care homes to do everything in their power to protect their residents. While many facilities stepped up to the challenge, some failed to properly contain the situation and their residents died as a result. We feel it is important for these facilities to be held accountable for their actions.
In fall 2020, Shepherd’s Care Foundation allowed an outbreak at their Millwoods Long Term Care Centre in South Edmonton. There were over 100 confirmed cases and over a dozen deaths as a result of this outbreak.
According to the Statement of Claim filed jointly by Guardian Law Group and James H. Brown & Associates: "At all relevant times, the defendants had an obligation to safeguard the life, health and dignity of residents and to ensure continued and adequate care."
According to the Statement of Claim, Shepherd’s Care failed to effectively communicate with its residents and their families. Allegedly, residents and their families were not warned about the outbreak and in some cases, Millwoods Long Term Care Centre failed to notify families when a loved one in their care had tested positive.
This case is about accountability, transparency and protecting those most vulnerable in our communities. In addition to financial compensations, one of the remedies sought by this Class Action is for Revera to declare that they were liable for the damages caused by this outbreak at their facility.
