Outbreak from Negligence at Revera’s McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre
Defendants: Revera Inc. (operating as McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre)
Summary: Over 100 confirmed cases and more than 21 deaths resulted from an apparent pattern of neglect and inadequate practices by Revera’s McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre.
One of the first pieces of information to come out about this ongoing pandemic is that COVID-19 has a disproportionately-high mortality rate amongst older adults.
As Canadians, we believe in protecting our families and safeguarding those in need. It should have been a priority by all care homes to do everything in their power to protect their residents. While many facilities stepped up to the challenge, some failed to properly contain the situation and their residents died as a result. We feel it is important for these facilities to be held accountable for their actions.
According to Alberta’s chief medical officer, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, one facility which had been slow to respond to public health protocols was McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre (owned and operated by Revera Inc.
Over 100 confirmed cases of COVID-19 began in this facility, with more than 21 deaths as a result.
At the time, the COVID outbreak at Revera’s McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre was by-far the largest outbreak of its kind in Alberta; at one point, this one site accounted for over 40% of the COVID-related deaths in the province.
Since the outbreak, multiple people have come forward publicly stating that they believe this facility had a history of neglecting residents for years prior to COVID-19. An AHS audit apparently took place in 2014 as a result from deaths at the facility, having found “gaps” and “inadequate” practices in some cases.
In addition to financial compensations, one of the remedies sought by this Class Action is for Revera to declare that they were liable for the damages caused by this outbreak at their facility.
