Negligence at Integrated Life Care Inc.’s Manoir du Lac Care Facility
Defendants: Integrated Life Care Inc.
Summary: Alberta Health Services felt that in order to control the COVID situation at Integrated Life Care Inc.’s Manoir du Lac care facility, it was necessary to remove the director of care from the site and to take control of the day-to-day operations.
COVID-19 is a serious concern for every Canadian. However, the data has painted a clear picture since the beginning: those most at risk from this pandemic are the elderly, the sick, and the immunocompromised.
It should therefore be a top concern to safeguard those most at risk. Unfortunately, residents at long-term care facilities often fall into all three of the above-listed categories.
While many facilities took the necessary steps to protect their residents, there were others which failed to meet the grade. Just as those that demonstrated exemplary service should be acknowledged, we feel it is important to acknowledge those that let down their residents, and that they are held accountable.
According to the class members of the Class Action lawsuit filed by Guardian Law Group, the Manoir du Lac continuing care facility in McLennan, Alberta (operated by Integrated Life Care Inc.) could have done more.
Nearly half of the seniors residing at Manoir du Lac have tested positive for COVID-19. At least 10 of them have died as a result. Additionally, a large portion of the staff tested positive as well. COVID-19 appears to have been brought in to the facility by 12 staff members who attended parties and contracted the virus, and whom were not tested in time.
Alberta Health Services eventually escorted the director of care out of the facility. AHS also eventually took over the day-to-day operation of the seniors’ residence.
According to a resident interviewed by CBC (who wished to remain anonymous), when they asked staff for details on the outbreak at the facility they were told “It's none of your business.”
