Poor Handling of COVID at Intercare’s Brentwood Care Centre
Defendants: Intercare Corporate Group Inc. operating as Brentwood Care Centre
Summary: 21 people died at Intercare Corporate Group Inc.’s Brentwood Care Centre during a COVID outbreak in spring 2020; there is evidence of negligence, such as staff not allowing residents to go to the hospital when showing symptoms and requested by their family.
The main priority for any longterm care centre should without a doubt be protecting the residents in their care. These residents are usually seniors who have some kind of medical condition or another, making them some of the most at-risk by COVID-19.
Knowing this, every care centre should have foreseen the risk that COVID had on their residents and done everything in their power to safeguard their residents. While many did an amazing job of keeping everyone safe, Interare Corporate Group Inc.’s Brentwood Care Centre is one centre which has been called out as having could’ve done more.
At the time of their outbreak, Brentwood Care Centre had the second-highest number of deaths among Alberta outbreaks. There were 72 confirmed cases at this Intercare location as a result of this outbreak, with 21 related deaths.
The Statement of Claim filed by Guardian Law Group alleges that staff working at Brentwood Care Centre did not take proper steps to protect patients in their care from COVID-19 and to ensure they received proper treatment once they exhibited symptoms, which resulted in preventable deaths. It is believed that a staff member brought COVID-19 into the facility.
The Representative Plaintiff in the Class Action claims her mother was a patient at Brentwood Care Centre. When her mother began exhibiting serious symptoms, medical staff at the centre refused to send her to the hospital despite several requests from her daughter. The staff did not send the patient to the hospital until days after the onset of COVID-19 symptoms, but by that time it was already too late. The patient tested positive for COVID-19 and soon died in hospital.
We want to ensure that our seniors are kept safe and that this doesn’t happen again needlessly in the future. In addition to financial compensations, one of the remedies sought by this Class Action is for Intercare to declare that they were liable for the damages caused by this outbreak at their facility.
