Avandia (Rosiglitazone) is an oral medication manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline used for the treatment of diabetes. Avandia was a fairly popular medication, having been taken by more than 6 million people since being released in 1999.
An advisory was posted by Health Canada in November of 2001 which indicated there were safety concerns being associated with this class of drug, with the primary concerns being raised about an apparent link between Avandia and an increased risk of heart attack.
GlaxoSmithKline has been aware of the risks of Avandia to the cardiovascular system for an extended length of time, however they had continued to heavily market the product, making claims regarding the safety of Avandia despite their findings to the contrary.
Anyone taking Avandia should consult with their physician immediately, but we do not advise stopping your medication without first consulting with a doctor.
Any person who has taken Avandia and has experienced a heart attack, coronary artery by-pass grafting or cardiac stenting procedures may be eligible for compensation under the class action.
